Typology

How do we discern types and analogies in the Old Testament? The study of types, and how to discern them, is called typology. What can we say about principles for typology?

First, we should appreciate how details fit into the larger contexts: the literary context, historical and social context, and the context of redemptive history. Edmund P. Clowney developed a two-stage process to help people think it through.1 In the first stage, we consider the meaning of a symbol in its immediate context in history. In the second stage, we travel forward to fulfillment in Christ.
