Chapter 3: Don’t Be Afraid… Mark Up Your Books!

“When you use color the information sticks better in your brain and is easier recalled.” – Tony Buzan

When I mentioned using a highlighter pen to mark interesting lines in your book, did you feel a little uncomfortable? Some people think books are sacred, and shouldn’t be folded, drawn on and generally interacted with.

I say nonsense to that!

Remember, don’t respect the book. Respect the writer and the ideas and messages they are trying to share. You can do this best by getting out a lot of different coloring pens and underlining and circling all you like.

Also fold pages over. Do everything you can to make that book easier and quicker to jump straight to the important bits in future. That’s showing real respect to the book and author. Treating the contents with so much value you want to remember, use and return to it another time.

Also, it’s well-known that both using colors and making some physical action enhances both your memory and comprehension of the ideas you’re reading. So get out those pens and get drawing!

If you mostly read digital non-fiction, then use your Kindle’s note-taking and highlighting function. And perhaps even keep a little notepad handy to jot down ideas. Always a good idea.

At the very heart of speed-reading or speed-mining is productivity, and respecting your time. Getting the most possible value into your life as quickly as possible. So at the level of one book, this means cutting out the dross and getting straight to the gold. Of course, this same way of thinking applies in a broader sense too. As we’ll talk about in the next chapter.
