CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Jane switched on the light in the living room as she led the way into her apartment, glad she was generally neat, because she definitely hadnât let herself entertain the idea of bringing Rosie home with her when she was getting ready earlier. She took Rosieâs coat and hung it with hers on the rack beside the door.
âThe place where the magic happens,â Rosie said, looking around the living room.
âMagic?â Jane asked, watching her.
âWhere you become Brie.â
âThatâs true,â Jane said. âI rarely let her out of this apartment.â
âIt feels very you,â Rosie said, wandering through the room.
âHow so?â Jane didnât bring many people here. She preferred to keep her space to herself, so she was curious what aspects of her Rosie saw in Janeâs decor.
âWell, itâs very modern and minimalistic, and sometimes modern spaces can feel almost untouchable, you know? So much metal and glass,â Rosie said. âBut your living room feels comfortable and inviting. Youâve got throw blankets on the couch like you cuddle up there with a book, and that plant in the corner livens things up.â
âI love my plants,â Jane said.
âAnd it looks like you take good care of them.â Rosie crossed the room to stand in front of Janeâs dragon tree, touching one of the leaves reverently.
âI do.â
âNo bookshelves,â Rosie observed.
âNo. I read mostly on my Kindle.â
Rosie turned to face her. âAnd where do you keep your books?â
âUm, theyâre in boxes in my closet,â she admitted.
Rosie pressed a hand against her chest. âFor shame, Jane. You should at least have them somewhere you can see them, so you can take pride in them here in your own home.â
âIâm working on it,â Jane said. âWould you like that hot cider I promised?â
âSure,â Rosie said with a look that said she wanted more than the cider, but neither of them seemed to be very forward when it came to romance, so they were going to have to take this one step at a time.
Jane went into the kitchen and set the kettle to boil while she put cider mix into two mugs. When she glanced into the living room, Rosie was sitting on the couch, texting on her phone. Maybe she was letting Lia know where she was. She and her roommates seemed to check in with each other that way, which was sweet. Plus, Rosie had a dog to think about. She might need to ask someone to walk him for her.
Those roommates might come in handy if Jane got her nerve up to ask Rosie to stay, because surely one of them could watch Brinkley for the night. Jane stared at the mugs in front of her, thinking about her current heroine, Skye. She wouldnât hesitate to walk into the living room and seduce the woman she wanted. If only Jane were as bold in real life.
The kettle began to whistle, and she lifted it, pouring hot water into both mugs. She stirred the mixture, and the air filled with the rich, spicy scent of cider.
