A man who works with a single elephant in India is called the elephant’s mahout. If the mahout trains his elephant with kindness, a powerful bond of love may form between them. If the mahout dies, it is not uncommon for the elephant to become depressed and refuse to eat until it also dies. If the elephant lives, it usually takes two or three years to get used to a new mahout. One Cambodian elephant recognized his mahout’s grave a half-century after his death.

The Earl of Southampton, Henry Wriothesley, who lived from 1573 until 1624, was imprisoned in the Tower of London during the reign of Elizabeth I. Utterly alone with nothing but stone walls around him, he contemplated the miserableness of his fate. His fear was deep because many people did not leave the dreaded Tower of London alive. No friends or relatives could help him there.

Suddenly he saw a familiar form. Was he going mad, too? But it was not a hallucination. It was his own sweet house cat come to cheer him and sit by his side in his hour of greatest need. He could scarcely believe his eyes. The faithful animal had climbed down a prison chimney to be with him. After the Earl was released by King James I, he had a portrait painted of himself with the little black-and-white cat in the background.

“I’ve loved animals all my life—their friendship has always meant as much to me as any of the friendships I’ve had in my life.”
