How to Encourage Wide and Deep Reading

There are things you can do to encourage your child to read both wide and deep:

When your child finds a topic that they are interested in, get a combination of books that they can read on their own and books that you read together so that you can use Active Reading to help them build knowledge and encourage conversation, but they can still read about the topic on their own.

As your child reads, compare and contrast new information with information you know they have about the topic. Ask: ◦ What did you learn?

◦ What was new for you?

◦ What did you already know about?
