Stage 2: Guided Practice

Following instruction in awareness, parents should provide children with opportunities to use the technology under their guidance and help them to recognize and demonstrate appropriate use. Children need to have an opportunity to learn the skills in a safe environment. Create an atmosphere where exploration and risk-taking are promoted. The home needs to be a place where children can investigate the technologies they use every day, including instant messaging (IM), handheld computers, and cell phones.

Children need to practice digital citizenship skills while the parent acts as a guide. Without guided practice, inappropriate use of technology can occur without children even being aware of it. During this period, children will need your support when mistakes are made.

Ask your children to reflect on the following questions:

When I learn about a new technology, do people explain all the steps required, or do they assume that I already know how to use the technology and skip important information?

Am I asked to demonstrate appropriate technology use to my parents (or another responsible adult), or do they take it for granted that I know the correct method?

Do I have regular conversations with a parent or other adult on what is considered a misuse or abuse of technology?

How do I best learn about appropriate technology use: from adults or from other sources (such as the Internet, friends, TV, or movies)?
