GROWING YOUR VEGETABLES

The start of spring is the best time to get started with your summer veggies. The cheapest way is to start with seeds and you can plant these straight into the soil. Plant more seeds than you need, then when they are at about one and half inches thin them out to allow for stronger growth. Early plantings do mean you may lose a few, but if you plant when the weather is warmer you can probably just plant the required number of seeds. Just follow the instructions on the seed packets.

You may need to cover your beds with a fine mesh so that the birds do not eat your seeds and seedlings.

I urge you to research the particular vegetables you are going to grow so that you get the nutrients right and the continuing fertilizer. Vegetables love being fed and every 2 – 3 weeks with liquid fertilizer will produce a great supply of fresh veggies.

As you grow your vegetables keep tilling the soil but take care not to damage root systems.

The idea of companion planting is a bit like that of rotating crops. Certain plants grow better when planted with certain other plants and that is because of the nutrients they either take from the soil or add back to the soil.
