Chapter 8
Planting and Maintaining Crops in a Raised Bed
I f you havenât yet figured out what you want to grow in your raised bed garden, then this chapter is for you. There are a lot of options available to you, though the primary factor limiting them is your local climate. You wonât be able to grow plants that need tons of sun if you donât have much and instead live in a colder area. However, once you move past this obstacle then you will find that there are plenty of plants that do great in a raised bed.
A raised garden bed is pretty much exactly the same as a regular garden bed but with some added benefits such as better drainage. If you could grow a plant in the ground in your local area, then you can grow it in a raised bed garden. However, there are some plants that do better in a raised bed than the ground. One example is succulents. These plants come from hot and dry areas and they like to have a soil that is very sandy, even to the point of being rocky. While too much moisture will rot just about any plantâs roots, succulents are especially prone to it. The added draining speed that comes from raising up a garden bed for succulents will help them to survive and thrive much easier than if they were just in the ground. In fact, if you are going to grow succulents at all then I absolutely suggest either a raised bed or an elevated position in the ground if possible.
But succulents are just one (beautiful) example of what you can grow in a raised garden bed. This chapter is filled with tons of others ranging from flowers to veggies and everything in between.
