GORILLAS AND THE SLOW FOOD MOVEMENT

“We are enslaved by speed and have all succumbed to the same insidious virus: Fast Life, which disrupts our habits, pervades the privacy of our homes and forces us to eat Fast Foods. Our defense should begin at the table with Slow Food. Let us rediscover the flavors and savors of regional cooking and banish the degrading effects of Fast Food.”

—From the Slow Food International Manifesto

Finding the best food takes work. Many of the gorilla’s favorite foods have prickly defenses that evolved against herbivores: tiny hooks, stings or needles, which require removal through a bit of manipulation to avoid smarting the mouth. They peel wild celery stalks, for example, and remove petioles (leaf stalks) from blackberries. They uproot certain plants, strip the roots, eat the high-protein insides, and discard the rest. Mountain gorillas have mastered the nutritious but tricky practice of consuming the stinging nettle (part of traditional diets in northern Europe for hundreds of years).

The mountain gorilla has at least 26 distinct leaf-processing actions; combining these actions into different sequences effectively disposes it to 78 separate food-processing patterns.
