Barely a Heartbeat

I asked for some towels and supplies so that I could give Doug a shower before we left, and the nurse accommodated us but gave no assistance. After getting him cleaned up and dressed, I laid next to him in the bed as we awaited the chariot. With my head on his chest, listening to his labored breathing, I started to count our breaths. For every four of mine, he had one. I began watching the clock and realized he was taking only four breaths a minute. I knew this wasn’t right, but I didn’t know what to do. I was trusting the doctors, because I didn’t know about throat cancer or opiates, and they did. They never came back in the room to check his vitals before we left.

In hindsight, I should have never taken him out of the hospital, and they should not have released him. He was opiate naïve; he had only been on opiates for five days. They should have observed Doug for at least 24 hours after increasing his opiates. They should not have increased two different opiates at the same time, let alone double both of them at once.

It took me about 6-8 months to realize it, but I believe this doctor had been playing God. She thought she was doing us a favor by overdosing him and sending him home with me to die. Little did she know I was not going to let that happen on my watch.
