NINETEEN

The Maegora shuddered and rattled and hissed and whistled. There were so many sounds coming from its broken, shredded body that Arkan’s senses became overwhelmed, and he suddenly had the urge to retreat into a dark, soundless cave.

“Arkan, stop obsessing over your newfound human and prepare for a rough landing.” Lodan growled. “Kurill, get over here and lend me your eyes. I need a navigator.”

Now Arkan could make out the topography of Eiolan through the window. They were flying across the sunlit side; he would have preferred darkness, but flying into the daylight was a strategic choice.

All Kordolians loathed sunlight.

Even their enemies.

He saw kuliks and kuliks of lush green forest, threaded through with winding waterways; dotted with shimmering oval-shaped bodies of water.

A vast ridge of stone mountains broke through the greenery, stretching along the landscape like a protruding spine. Arkan squinted against the infernal sunlight, shielding his eyes with one hand.

In the seat before him, Soraya was silent.

He bent over and stole a look at her face.

She was utterly transfixed.

Her brown eyes were wide. Her lips were slightly parted. She was absolutely delectable.

“It looks like Earth,” she said softly, her voice filled with wonder. “Only there are no cities, no farms, no signs of civilization at all. I can’t even see any deserts down there.”

“I can’t believe this place even exists,” Reiko marveled. “We just hang out on Earth, going about our boring little lives, and there are planets like this out there. Why haven’t they shown us more of this place? I’ve heard of it, but I didn’t realize it was like this.”

“I think there are a bunch of people that want to keep this place for themselves,” Tia muttered. “Keep the riff-raff out, if you know what I mean.”

“And we are the riff-raff, huh?” A wry laugh escaped Soraya’s tantalizing lips. The sunlight burnished her face, casting a golden glow across her beautiful features. “I suppose we do look a bit like that right now. If we ever make it back to Earth… after all of this, we’re going to be in trouble, aren’t we?”

She no longer looked tired.

She looked energized.

Arkan had never seen anything more beautiful in his life.

Arkan didn’t really know what she was talking about. You will not be in any kind of trouble, I can assure you. I will personally tear apart any human that tries to harm you.

As they hurtled toward the surface of a wild, untamed planet, Arkan decided that he would pursue this female with every fiber of his being.

He would pursue her and protect her and seduce her until she had no choice but to fall hard for him, the same way all those human females had succumbed to his battle-brothers—those hard, cold-hearted bastards.

Tch. How in the Nine Hells had any of them managed to Claim such delicate, tender-hearted creatures?

Tarak’s words rang in his mind. “Certain humans are clever, adaptable, and highly resilient. They are somewhat sheltered, since their planet has never been invaded. At first, they will be wary and mistrustful—much like defenseless creatures that encounter their natural predators.
