They appeared together at a recital on 24 October 1916 in Moscow, at which she sang the first performance of his new songs, and they repeated the programme in Petrograd and Kharkov. Engel wrote, ‘on most occasions the singer is the centre of attraction and no-one bothers much about the accompanist, but for once it was the other way about.’23 Before they were to appear in Kiev, and other southern cities, Rachmaninoff heard that Koshetz had signed up for further performances without telling him. He wrote rebuking her:

Is this really true? Why didn’t you tell me? Is it possible that you signed up without showing the contract to an adult? Did you limit the length of the tour? Has the itinerary been shown you? In such matters you are worse than a child. Merely because you’ve chatted with some acquaintances you are ready to sign anything. This, unfortunately, is very like you.24
