Marshal Zhukov wrote:

Our advance did not stop by day or by night. Our every effort was aimed at giving the enemy no chance to organize a defence or new strongpoints. The basic formations of the armies were well organized in depth. By day the first wave would advance and by night the second wave would take over.

Each army taking part in the assault had been assigned zones of action. The units and smaller elements were assigned specific street, squares and other objectives. Behind the seeming chaos of street-to-street fighting was a logical and well-thought-out system. Its main objectives became targets for devastating fire.9
