Crosshatching practice squares

This tonal value scale is created by adding layers of crosshatched lines.

This water buffalo is a small-scale example of crosshatching from the practice board.

The mule portrait (here) will take you step-by-step through a crosshatching project.

Pointillism

Simple dots create the shading of a pointillism work. The temperature setting, pen tip profile, and density of the dot pattern together determine the tonal value of your shading.

Low temperature settings create pale-toned, small dots. As you increase the temperature, the pen tip will burn a larger, darker spot on your project. A lightly packed dot pattern allows more of the natural color of the wood to show through, giving the area a paler tonal value than an area of tightly packed dots.

Each pen tip creates its own shape of dot. A ball tip makes a perfect, small circle pattern, while a looped tip will leave a small oval. Square wire shaders used on a corner point will create a small, straight line.

Experiment on your practice board with all three variables—heat setting, pen choice, and density of dots—to determine which combination gives you the best results.
