Saturday–Sunday, June 13 – 14, 1812

Elizabeth lay with her head in Darcy’s lap reflecting on all the things her husband did for her today. She awoke to his insistence on her not removing from their bed until after they broke their fast, provided for them in their chambers and consisting of everything she loved to eat these days, including those thing which he personally found a repulsive combination. When they did finally arrive downstairs, he ushered her to the music room where he insisted she unwrap several pieces of music she was recently eyeing at the shops. He then enthusiastically led her outside where he surprised her with her very own phaeton, readied for the two to disappear somewhere around the grounds of Pemberley – where exactly, he would not divulge.

Darcy spent some time teaching Elizabeth how to hold the reins and what to do in guiding the horses, insisting she had more natural ability than she would admit to owning. When he finally took the reins from her again, he led them to a secluded glen next to the river.

“We used to come here as young boys and swim,” Darcy said when they had eaten their fill and were lounging beneath the tree.

“My sisters and I dearly loved to swim, though my mother considered it scandalous behavior and refused to hear of our adventures.”

“So do you wish to go swimming today?” Darcy’s eyebrow rose in challenge.

“Are you certain this is a secluded spot?” Elizabeth looked around.

“Yes, completely; I come here often and the grounds keeper is under strict orders to not send anyone here unless I request their attention to a particular need.” He looked around, “As you can see, the foliage coverage is practically a wall around this area.”

Elizabeth slid over to her husband’s side and reached for the buttons on his waistcoat as she kissed him fully on the lips. Within minutes the two were undressed and splashing around in the sun warmed water, Darcy once again grateful for his wife’s unconventional character traits that endeared her to him so well.

An hour later they returned to the shore and dressed, then lay down to relax under the shade of the trees once again as the smell of summer flowers wafted in the light breeze.

Darcy was leaned back onto the trunk of the tree playing with Elizabeth’s curls as they lay drying on his lap. His other hand instinctively reached for her stomach and made gentle circles where their child lay inside, and before they knew it the two drifted off to sleep.

The clamorous sound of a thunder clash and the sudden sprinkling of rain woke them. Quickly gathering their things, they barely made it to the safety of a nearby covering before the downpour started.

“We will be safe in here for now,” Darcy replied, not seeing the ashen look that overtook his wife’s face until he turned around. He only had a moment to react and barely caught her as she fainted.

Elizabeth could not see anything around her, but she could hear the sound of rushing water somewhere nearby.
