Nick

Freya’s fingers brush mine as she takes her wine glass, and even that small touch excites me. The kiss we’d shared had been unlike any other, and I can’t wait to touch her more.

But first, dinner.

“I have manicotti and fettuccine Alfredo,” I say. “Do you have a preference, or should we share?”

“Let’s share,” she says with a smile. “I love both, and I don’t want to have to decide.”

I resist the urge to tell her that I’m so smitten, I’m entirely at her command. She looks so graceful, even sitting on the floor. I can’t hold back any longer and I lean in to kiss her again.

“At this rate, we’re never going to eat,” she says, smiling.

“Oh, I plan to eat, Freya,” I say teasingly. “Although not necessarily dinner.”

She blushes adorably and looks down, a small smile on her lips.

“But it’s probably a good idea to have dinner. Keep our strength up.”

“Are you always this forward?” she says shyly, her eyes locking on mine.

“Almost never, but then again, I don’t know that I’ve ever wanted anything as much as I want you.”

“You don’t have to do that, you know,” she says.

“Do what?”

She’s glancing away from me again. “I know what I look like, Nick.”

“Then you know exactly what I’m talking about.”

“I’m not the physical ideal. I never have been.”

I take her hand and lift it to my lips, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. “Freya, look at me.”

Her eyes are full of doubt when she looks up again.

“I think you’re beautiful, and smart, and funny. I wasn’t lying when I said that I’ve wanted you from the moment I first saw you. I’m not sure where you got the idea that you’re not desirable. You are exactly what I’ve been looking for. And to find out that your personality is as gorgeous as your looks? I still can’t quite believe it.”

She shakes her head, and I can tell she stubbornly holds on to the idea she’s not attractive.

I’ll just have to show her until she believes me.

But for now, I switch the conversation to steadier ground.

“So, you mentioned that you wanted to be a lawyer?”

She laughs, clearly relieved at the change in topic.

“I majored in pre-law and everything.”

“What made you change your mind?”

Freya sighs. “I always thought I wanted to be a lawyer to make things better, you know? To help right injustices. But the more I got into the field, the more I felt like a lot of what I’d be doing was protecting the people in power from having to take responsibility for their actions. I know that there are areas of law where that’s not true, but overall, I suppose I became disillusioned with the system at the age of twenty-one.”

“So… yorkies?”

Her face lights up. “My aunt was going to try breeding them, but she didn’t really understand everything involved, and, when she did, she decided it wasn’t for her. So she asked me if it was something I’d be interested in. Turns out, I really was. As soon as the first litter of puppies came along, there wasn’t anything else I wanted to do.
