PRIMORDIALIST AND INSTRUMENTALIST/CONSTRUCTIVIST APPROACHES TO ETHNICITY

In general terms, primordialists see ethnicity as an inescapable cultural given, unchanging, and unchangeable. Primordial attachments, they argue, are the primary drivers of emotional actions and bind individuals into groups. There are two key proponents of this perspective, although their arguments differ substantially. Clifford Geertz (1973) observes the importance of primordial attachments that, he argues, grow out of congruities of blood, speech, and custom. They are both ineffable and coercive at the same time but, because they are about innate affection and attachment to territory or kin, they generate the sentiments of belonging.
