The last time I was on an airplane racing to Europe I was pissed at Irish and passed the air miles detailing one hundred ways to kick his ass. This time, he was sitting next to me, earbuds in, laughing with Dix at a movie made for people whose testosterone levels were higher than their IQ.

Sleep wasn’t having me. She was a flirt, pressing close, dancing against me only to push me away when I gave in.

The problem was I hadn’t done enough today. All that talking and scheming had to be done to take down the Gray Plaid currently known as Oliver. My mind was fully engaged; my body, well, not so much. And I was sitting for the next six hours with nothing to do but contemplate what to do with the rest of my life.

After Gavriil’s death, everything we built together felt empty. The house, the neighborhood, the job, they weren’t me. I felt like I was in some bad body-switch movie, stuck in somebody else’s life with no way back to myself. Finding Gavriil’s killer gave me purpose but, looking back, I put myself on a one-way track.

If I couldn’t figure out what came next, well, I was as good as dead. No, worse, I was as good as the living dead. I was a zombie, staggering through the world on an eternal quest for brains.

Irish covered my hand, squeezing it. “You okay?”

I tilted my head toward him. “What could possibly be wrong?”

“One day at a time,” he said cryptically, bringing my knuckles to his lips, before getting pulled back into the movie.

Irish was right about one thing. I hate boring.

If I wasn’t going to slut myself out to every stranger with a sad story and an IOU, I needed to find something to do that was both intellectually stimulating and physically challenging. That wasn’t too much to ask.
