Better Than Sacrifice

Proverbs about

Justice

In Jesus’ day, the Pharisees were the best law-followers around—or so they thought. They meticulously gave the religious requirement of a tenth (a tithe) of even the smallest things. This, however, didn’t impress Jesus at all:

Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. (Matt. 23:23)

In Bible times, the people of God made sacrifices at the temple to atone for sins. But no temple sacrifice, no tithe, and no religious law-following could make up for the absence of what was most important—justice, mercy, and faithfulness. As Proverbs states, “To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice” (Prov. 21:3).

True, godly wisdom—as the introduction to Proverbs reminds us—involves “doing what is right and just and fair” (Prov. 1:3). The wise person in Proverbs is one whose actions consider the good of others, particularly those in society who are most vulnerable.

In this session, we’ll look at what Proverbs says about topics such as honesty, false testimony, bribery, the courts, revenge, mercy, privilege, and power. In short, we’ll see what God’s Word says about justice.
