If it had not been for the car crash in Paris, I probably would have ended up in America, as part of the Al-Fayed security team tasked with looking after Diana and Dodi. Now that they were gone, everything was up in the air and everyone was affected by the accident. It was a really intense time. We were all very upset about what had happened and the family were grieving. Some of the security team had already moved on. The London operation was a horrible place to be in at that time.

When I wasn’t there, I was living on my own in Baxenden, a village in Lancashire probably best known as the home of Holland’s pies. I was in a bad relationship at the time, which didn’t help, and it soon went toxic, so that was another reason why I wanted to get away.

So when I heard that the security guy at the St. Tropez estate was leaving, I jumped at the chance of replacing him for a while. I went out there for four weeks and it was just what I needed. By then, the summer was over and it was a quiet time in St. Tropez. I had free run of the villa complex, a four-acre site with a thirty-bedroom estate. A winding road took you for about half a mile from the beach up the hill to the main house, which was inside a gated enclosure. As well as the main house, there were a couple of guest houses, a fisherman’s cottage and the accommodation for up to twenty security guys, who weren’t needed at this point because the family weren’t using it. The place was virtually empty and mostly locked up.

I had my own quarters and even a sun terrace on the roof. I just had to hang out there and keep an eye on the place to make sure everything was looked after. The housekeeper and his wife were still there but I hardly saw them because it was such a big site. He booked everyone in and out at the front gate, which was not manned when the family were absent. It was done by cameras and an intercom. The only people coming in and out, apart from us, were some local French builders who were creating an underground luxury spa next to the disco. I would say hello to them each morning but they usually finished their day early then were on the piss, so I didn’t see that much of them.

I didn’t have much to do really but I kept myself busy and tried to be useful. I cleaned the pools and watered the plants in the greenhouse, I checked the boathouse and walked the perimeter, making sure everything was as it should be. I had some monitors and cameras and there were alarms but it was so quiet and nothing ever happened. The place was almost deserted and, because it was gated, everything was locked up at night. I just had to walk round last thing to make sure all was in order.
