4 Temporarily move both of the back prongs outward with chain-nose pliers. Grab the entire length of a prong and slowly tilt it outward to allow access to the interior. This makes it possible to cut the seat and then push the prong back into its original position.
5 Depending on the cut of the stone and the height you are setting it, it may be advisable to remove some metal from the inside of the pear-shaped seating wire. If the pavilion is particularly thick, if the setting particularly shallow, or if for some other reason it looks like the lower portion of the stone will hit the seating wire, trim it back. Use a 3 mm bud bur to carefully carve down the wire as needed, leaving a flat, angled facet on the interior. Fine needle files and/or gravers can also be used to make this cut or to work in difficult areas.
