12 Move the metal in and out; depending on which side you are working on, until the pieces will no longer fit inside each other. The ideal place to stop before filing, is when both edges of the ring halves overlap. If they overlap too much, excessive filing will be required. If they overlap too little, less filing will be needed. This is also a good time to make sure that the outer half is 2 mm shorter than the inner band when placed side-byside on a flat surface.

13 Now for the final fit. Use a half-round, inside ring file to remove metal from the interior of the outer band, leaving a perfectly round hole (check the final hole on a mandrel). Use long curving strokes, file on both sides of the ring at the same time, trimming the metal until you see an even, flat rim on the inside.
