4a. If this is a smaller project, insert the music now. If you’re using library cuts, trim them to length. It doesn’t take much effort or musical talent to stretch or shorten a piece of music seamlessly (Chapter 14 teaches you how). 4b. If this is a theatrical feature with a custom score, the music mix might not be finished until very late in the soundtrack process. But since the dialog and effects in a narrative feature are considered the characters’ reality, it’s appropriate to build those non-musical elements before the score. So skip directly to the next step.

5. Add background ambiences. On a smaller project or if time and budget are limited, don’t do this until you’ve added the music. In a lot of films and videos, music can take the place of ambience.

6. Add whatever smaller sync effects seem to be missing. A lot of times, you’ll find that a random noise from an ambience track can be nudged a few frames to take the place of a sync effect.
