‘Krom’ (detail). While working on the graphic elements of this paper, Maschek was thinking of iceskating and the tracks the skates leave behind. The name ‘Krom’ is intended to represent the sound made by the skates scraping and rasping over the ice.
With ‘Ava’, Maschek’s aim was to create a wallpaper with a dark, strong, twisted and highly dramatic character. As she was working on it, she saw an early film noir by Robert Siodmak, The Killers (1946). This atmospheric film, characterized by stark lighting and deep shadows, stars Ava Gardner, who gave the wallpaper its name.
