III Toxoids

As described in Chapter 13, the disease caused by a pathogen may be entirely due to its production of exotoxins. Thus, vaccinating a host against the exotoxin protects the host from disease (if not infection). Toxoids are exotoxin molecules that have been chemically altered (usually by formalin treatment) such that they lose their toxicity but not their immunogenicity. Neutralizing antibodies generated in response to toxoid administration bind to the exotoxin and render it harmless. For example, vaccination or boosting with the tetanus toxoid protects against this disease for at least 5 years. Diphtheria is also prevented by toxoid administration.
