Given our interest in cognitive processes, the focus of this chapter is on the different types of cultural transmission and social learning characteristic of different primate species. We begin our investigation with the natural phenomena: the population-specific behavioral traditions of primates in the wild. As much as possible we look at these with an eye to which types of learning or social learning might underlie them. We then turn to observational and experimental studies of captive primates that seek to identify more analytically the different types of social learning processes in which primates engage and which might account for population differences of behavior in the wild. We look first at the social learning of instrumental activities (mostly involved with feeding) and then at the social learning of communicative signals. We conclude with a brief look at primate behaviors that some researchers have referred to as “teaching,” since these too have important implications both for how individuals learn from one another and for how they understand one another.
