The chopper ride was short, and though it was Mark’s first time in the air in a helicopter, it was certainly no scenic tour. They sped at a fast clip over mountains toward a skyline of buildings. Denver? He couldn’t say he knew what the city looked like, so he didn’t know for sure. But what other big cities were so close to Buckshot?

He’d tried a few times to engage the man who had shot Samantha, but the guy just stared out the front window. Mark lifted his bound hands and scratched his nose. Not the first time he’d been tied up, but handcuffs were a lot more professional than this. Usually he was hauled into an alley by a goon, who worked for whoever Mark owed money to, and had the snot kicked out of him. Message received.

That was the past though. And again, the present didn’t seem all that dissimilar.

Was Samantha dead? Mark didn’t even want to think about that. He’d called out to her as they dragged him from the building, but no one had replied.

The wound was in her shoulder, but she could have bled out. He thanked God that hadn’t been Caisey on the floor with blood pouring out of her, but the alternative wasn’t much better. Mark shut his eyes and breathed another in a long string of prayers.

They flew toward an airfield. Not a major airport. This one only had one runway that looked in serious disrepair and a single building, a hangar. They landed close to it, and he saw a limo parked inside.

“Is that Earnest?” He didn’t expect an answer, he was more processing what was about to happen to him. Probably he’d be killed, and his body would never be found. The FBI would discover their files on Earnest had been lost in a freak virus, because how else could he take care of it? They had proof Earnest had been meeting with the Chinese mafia. It wasn’t a stretch from there to his being implicated in the man’s business dealings.

The leader shoved him out the door and toward the hangar. One hand gripped the back of Mark’s shirt. The remaining man followed, which left the pilot alone in the helicopter. They walked so fast Mark stumbled a couple of times.

He half expected the FBI to swarm in from all around them…at any moment…but they didn’t.

A suited man opened the limo’s rear door. He didn’t wear one of those black caps, but he was probably the driver. Or a bodyguard. Mark had seen Earnest in the office, but was still taken aback when he emerged from the vehicle. Gray suit, dark blue tie. Expensive shoes. Even his hair style looked like it cost money.

The guy who held Mark shoved him forward then palmed his gun with both hands instead of holding it with one. “Cost me two men. That’s extra.”

Samantha had shot those guys, probably saving all their lives—including Caisey’s. And all this guy cared about was recouping lost money? Not much honor in this man.
