a. Deconstruction and repurposing or reuse during the product design life.

Gypsum: Generally, undamaged gypsum board may be removed and reused in similar applications. For reuse in fire-rated applications, verify acceptability for that purpose prior to use. The paper facing must remain intact on gypsum board to be reused. Finish materials may be removed (so as not to damage the paper facing) or covered with new finish materials.

Scrap gypsum may be reclaimed onsite or recycled offsite. Refer to end-of-life below.

b. Deconstruction and repurposing or recycling at end-of-life.

Gypsum: Typically, recycling of gypsum board has meant that “clean” construction scrap was crushed for lawns (i.e., soil amendment), industrial use and agricultural use. Markets for recycled gypsum include agriculture land applications (as a source of sulfur and calcium), compost additive, ingredient in portland cement, and source material for the production of new drywall. More recent reclamation technologies have targeted the mixed waste generated in renovation and demolition as well. The new technologies can handle gypsum board waste containing nails, screws, and various wall coverings.

Additional progress is anticipated for the gypsum recycling industry. EuroGypsum, the European association for the gypsum industry, has obtained a grant of 1.7 million Euro from the EU Life+ program for a project with the following title: “From cradle to cradle: a circular economy for the European gypsum industry with the demolition and recycling industry.”63 The research effort kicked off in January 2013 and will last for 3 years. The ultimate objective is to facilitate a closed-loop life cycle for gypsum. The more immediate aim of the project is to help the gypsum industry, and the related construction and waste sector, achieve the requirement of 70 percent recycling of gypsum waste in Europe by 2020 as prescribed by the EU Waste Directive.64
