Pete grabbed Eva’s arm and yanked her out from behind the counter, but one of the bikers from the bar stood up and blocked his way.

“Don’t treat our little lady like that,” he growled.

“Your little lady?” asked Pete.

“That’s right,” said another of the burly men coming over to join him. “Touch her again and I’ll flatten you right here.”

“Oh really?” Pete let go of Eva, ready to fight the men if need be. He didn’t want trouble, but he also didn’t want Eva serving alcohol to guys like this either.

“Mack, Hoss, it’s all right,” said Eva, stepping in between them. “This is Pastor Pete. He’s here to pick me up.”

“A pastor? Sorry about that,” said Mack.

“Yeah, we just thought you wanted to hurt Eva. Our apologies,” said the huge guy she’d called Hoss.

“Let’s go,” Pete growled, furious with Eva for what she’d done.

“Don’t forget the rest of your tips,” said Mack, holding out the tip jar to her.

“Thanks!” Eva stuck her hand in the jar and took the wad of cash as Pete pulled her away from the men.

“I’m sure you’d like to donate this as well as the rest of your tips to the church,” said Pete pulling the money out of her hand.

“No, I don’t,” she said. “That’s my money.”

“You might want to rethink that, Evie, since I know you didn’t make this money cleaning urinals. Now let’s go before you end up getting yourself into trouble by hanging around men like these.”

“They’re nice,” she protested. “Plus they tipped me well.”

“And who knows what they’re going to want in exchange for those tips once they have a few more beers.” He pulled her out of the bar, and once out by his bike, he shoved the helmet into her hands. “What were you thinking? You know you weren’t supposed to do that. This isn’t the place for a young girl like you to be hanging out and partying with men who ride motorcycles.”

“You ride a motorcycle,” she reminded him.

“That’s different. Most the guys from out of town who come in here don’t know it’s no longer a strip joint. It could end up in a bad situation. And if things got out of hand, Nate could actually lose his bar because of you.”

“You told me I had a job here,” she said, strapping on her helmet. “And nothing was going to happen.”

“You don’t know that. Besides, your job here was not serving alcohol.”

“I was covering for Bruno.”

“He’ll be fired for that.”

“No, tell Nate that Bruno had to go pick up his wife. Something must have happened since he never came back.”

“Did you get the rest of the work done that Nate told you to do?”

“No. And you didn’t tell me I’d be cleaning urinals.”

“Get on the bike, Evie, and let’s go home. It’s been a long day.”

“Do you think I should tell Nate that I quit?”

“Don’t worry about it. I think he knows.”
