Strategy #26

Phrase it

You don’t know how much artists go through to make it look so easy. It’s all in the practice.

— Lauryn Hill

Phrases are like musical “sentences” that express a complete thought or idea. We find various phrase lengths in music with diverse composer markings. Most often, composers mark a phrase with a curved line (or slur). Sometimes composers use dynamic markings to show the shape of the phrase. Sometimes there is nothing! I find these symbols confusing and contradictory. Instead, I suggest that you try the following process to Phrase It.

Make a clean copy of your music

On the copy, use liquid eraser and remove phrase slurs and phrase dynamics

Make another copy of the copy—one that is now clean for your markings

Refer to the original and make artistic decisions about the music. Mark your phrases in a new way—see illustrations below
