Joshua centered himself best able in the seat of his car. Back straight. Chest out. Big boy pants on. “I’d like to offer my services to Allie to watch Ava so she can go back to school fulltime.” Deciding on the fly to ignore the fact he’s already done so. “I know this isn’t the best time to ask, but it might be the best time to offer, before she moves in. Allow us to set a timeline in case her marital issues take a turn for the worse, and this becomes her permanent home, with no exit sign in sight.” There. He’s said it. See if she forearm smashes him or worse, lobs one over his head, making him have to run down the ball, now clearly on her side of the court.

“You want to quit work and become a stay at home mom.”

Statement. No infliction in her wording. Why this probably isn’t the best time to ask. Can’t see what her eyes are saying. “Yes.”

The pause goes long. She’s debating every aspect of this. He knows not to interrupt. Nor to pile on. They’ve discussed this before, though not in the context of what he wants in trade, but for balance. The past putting in perspective what the future holds, and Ava being a perfect reason to move forward.

“Okay.”

He waits for the second ball, certain there’s going to be one, because this came too easy.

“But no quitting work until she’s enrolled. Fulltime. In a course of study we both…correction. All three of us must agree on.”

“Deal.”

“Not yet, Josh. A favor I need to ask of you. I planned on waiting till I got home, but this long-distance venue seemed to work out pretty well for you,” the slightest of tease back in her voice. “I might as well try myself.”

Joshua braced himself for the hit. Not exactly sure what, but by the length of the pause, he’s no reason to believe this is going to be as easy of a yes or no proposition as his.

“First of all I want to stress, while related in a way, this is in no means a tit for tat kind of question. Not asking because you asked one, but because of what you asked.”

“Meaning?” to add to the conversation. Far better that correcting her usage, it’s tip for tap, as in the trading of light blows, but not the time, or place, to impress her with a sampling of the useless trivial crap he carries around to drop on these very circumstances.

“We communicate well, Josh. But I think it’s better, sooner, than later, I ask now. Before I get home.”

His shields instantly go up. “Alright.” What else can he say?

“I know we kidded about this on my call to you the morning I left. Why I want to be clear about it. Do you remember me promising to make my going to this wedding up to you, and you saying you’d be fine waiting another two weeks?”

“I might have been teasing. Playing along.
