One method of saving the cost of mobile function-only decoders is to hard wire multiple units together so that the running lights are supplied with power. Another option shown here is to fit miniature plug and socket assemblies. Both solutions are cumbersome and hard wiring for stock used on portable layouts is truly impractical.

Some command stations will not always acknowledge the presence of a mobile function-only decoder in a trailer vehicle if it is connected to low current consumption circuits, such as those using LEDs. In that situation it is useful to place a second vehicle with a decoder connected to a motor or similar device that has a higher load so the command station can detect that there is an installation that has been correctly made. Programme both models together. In this situation I sometimes, resort to using a completely different locomotive for joint programming with trailer vehicles. When programming is complete I reprogram the locomotive back to its original address settings.

Cascading old and obsolete locomotive decoders to function-only status can offset the cost of providing lighting controls in multiple units. This is an older Lenz LE1014 four-function decoder that has been superseded by more sophisticated versions in the locomotive fleet. Yet it still works and can control lighting circuits such as those fitted to a Bachmann Class 159.
