Buttercup Family
This plant is a dioecious species, meaning that the male and female flowers are found on separate plants. The leaves are very similar in appearance to those of Columbines (Aquilegia), occurring in threes, but this plant’s leaves are three times ternate – 3 × 3 × 3 – for a total of 27 leaflets per leaf. Neither gender of flowers has any petals. The male flower resembles a small wind chime, with the stamens hanging down like tassels. The female flowers resemble small, star-shaped pinwheels. The plant prefers cool, moist forest environments. Indigenous peoples used the species variously as a medicine, a love charm, and a stimulant for horses.
