movie—comes with a high, long-held note on the verbal image of a warm, all-encompassing embrace with the motherland (“Ah, my lovely native country / when can I go back into your arms”). This is movingly echoed by Wong and his loyal collaborator, editor William Chang, through the insertion of brief shots of lovers’ embraces. As the text expresses the hope that the “fogs” of war and occupation give way to a rebirth, joyful images fill the screen until the shots of a filmed pageant literalize the final verbal reference to blooming flowers that end the song and, with it, the short film.
