ARTHROPODS
The arthropods are the most diverse and speciose group of animals on Earth! They range from insects to chelicerates like horseshoe crabs to crustaceans like shrimp, true crabs, and lobsters. Arthropods have external skeletons, or exoskeletons, and segmented bodies where each segment has a pair of appendages. To grow, arthropods must molt, or shed their old exoskeletons for a new, larger exoskeleton to form. What we most often find while beachcombing are these moltsâthe pieces of the exoskeleton rather than the remains of whole arthropods.
