Marsh Gentian Gentiana pneumonanthe

This is an erect or ascending, hairless perennial up to 40cm tall. The leaves are blunt, narrowly linear and up to 4cm long, growing in opposite pairs on the stem only (not in a basal rosette). The flowers are large, trumpet-shaped and bright blue with spotted green stripes on the outsides; they are up to 4cm long and borne in terminal clusters of up to ten flowers, though normally fewer.

FLOWERING TIME September–November.

DISTRIBUTION

Uncommon, growing in scattered sites across England and Wales, particularly in southern locations such as England’s New Forest, in damp, acidic habitats such as wet heaths and dune slacks. It is rare or absent in Scotland and Ireland, and generally declining through habitat loss.
