Marsh and Willow Tits are difficult to tell apart (see Willow Tit). Both species are sandy-brown above and buff below, and both have black heads and bibs. The key things to look for in Marsh Tits are a small, neat black bib, white cheeks and a glossy black cap; the wings also lack the pale wing-patch of Willow Tits. However, the Marsh Tit is most easily identified by its ringing pitchoo call, which sounds like a high-pitched sneeze, and a frequently uttered, more trilling chicka-dee-dee-dee.
HABITAT AND DISTRIBUTION
Mainly deciduous, older, established woodland and sometimes gardens in much of central and western Europe.
DIET
Feeds mainly on insects, as well as seeds, berries and beechmast. It is a regular at feeders in areas adjoining the woodland in which it is found. It feeds on the ground more frequently than other tits. Seeds and fat cake can attract it to a garden, and it also favours live mealworms.
NESTING
Like other tits this is a hole nester and will use nest boxes regularly. The nest is lined with grass, moss, hair and feathers. The female lays 5â11 eggs, which are glossy white with brown marks. She incubates the eggs and the male joins her to feed the young.
