Downstairs there's a bang of a door closing. It must be the neighbours leaving for work. I read over the tweet before pressing send. It's not a magnificent tweet, but I've got a whole day to write something better.

"Hey good morning!"

I look up in alarm. Alex has appeared on the landing, his face red, his chest still heaving from what must have been a grand finale sprint. I didn't hear him come up. He gives me a big smile, which I'm not sure how to react to. The last time we saw each other I retreated to my room in a hump.

"Good morning," I say.

“I didn’t know you ran.”

“I don’t. It’s the first time in ages.”

“Nice t-shirt.”

I glance doubtfully at my fluorescent top. “Thanks, it's about five years old.”

“Well, it still works…" He's pushes a hand through his hair, seems to be considering something, "Look, I’m sorry about the other day.”

I wasn’t expecting an apology. “I’m sorry too, I overreacted.”

“No, I was rude… I mean, we hardly know each other.”

I let out a little laugh, “So it’s okay to be rude if you know the person?”

“It’s okay to be honest…” he says, suppressing a smile.

"Look, I have issues with my job too…"

I'm about to launch into an explanation, but he cuts me off.

"It's none of my business, May."

No it's not, but his conclusion feels unsatisfactory. He's basically telling me he doesn't care.

"It's just something I need to do now…" I say.

He nods at my hands, which are gripping my phone as if it were trying to escape. "You run with your phone?"

I feel frustrated that he's caught me with it. "It's just for music."

"Oh yeah of course…is it heavy?" he shows me his shuffle mini clipped to the top of his shorts. I get a glimpse of his toned stomach. "This is a bit lighter."

"I don't really notice the weight."

He nods. "Well, I suppose I better get going."

My phone buzzes with a new notification.

He lets out a little laugh. "That's the other bonus of a shuffle, it leaves you in peace."

I wish you'd leave me in peace, I think half-heartedly.

“I meant to put it on aeroplane mode,” I lie.

"That’s a good idea.”

He hovers there a moment longer and I find myself searching manically for something witty to say.

“Well, see you later, then," he says. "Hope you have a productive day!"

Was that a last little poke at my job?

"Thanks. Good luck with whatever advert you're filming today.”

"Thanks! It's a freebie for Save the Children. Should be good."

It was a poke! How I wish I'd just gone straight inside and not hovered on the landing sending those pointless bloody tweets.

Alex starts up the second flight of stairs, taking two at a time. The gorgeous scent of his aftershave lingers in the air. He must have been using it so long, it's become his natural smell. I bend down to pick up my shoes and turn to the door.

"Oh, May," he calls, coming back down a couple of steps. "Did Louisa tell you she got the part?"

That explains why she was out so late.
