BDSM And The Art Of Switching

Anybody new to BDSM, or who has only read about it, might be forgiven for assuming that those involved fall neatly into two categories: dominant and submissive, and that those who take both roles, switches, are either timid newcomers who have yet to fully explore their sexuality, or mere players dabbling with sadomasochism.* That’s the attitude taken by most old school BDSM literature, although it’s worth remembering that de Sade himself was a switch, and it’s also a common attitude online, particularly with commercial BDSM pornography. That’s all very well for fantasy, and there seem to be plenty of people who would like it to be reality, but anybody who has actually been involved with BDSM for any length of time knows that the truth is very different. Yes, there are people who always express themselves as either dominant or submissive, but nowadays they’re in the minority, while long experience has taught me to take people’s claims never to switch with a very large pinch of salt indeed. No doubt there are those who genuinely have no desire whatsoever to experience the other side of the BDSM coin. In the full, rich variety of human character there are certain to be, but they are rare. Even then, most of them appreciate that other people have different, but no less valid tastes, and it is only a few, blinkered individuals who feel that no wanting to switch makes them somehow superior or true.

Nevertheless, there is still some stigma attached to switching, and far more often than not, once you get to know somebody well enough, male or female, sub or dom, you’ll find out that they’re not quite so absolute as they pretend to be. Take Mistress Dominique (not a name she actually used for obvious reasons), one of London’s most highly skilled professional dominas during the ‘nineties. She was young, beautiful and naturally assertive, a genuine sadist and also intelligent, all of which made her extremely popular and allowed her to charge impressively high rates. Her clients worshipped her, and one of the reasons they did so was that she never, ever switched. She was untouchable, unassailable, Artemis and Aphrodite rolled into one. One night she dropped in on us for a drink after visiting a client who lived nearby. She was telling us how he liked her to be completely covered, including gloves and veil, so that no mere man should be permitted to see so much as a square inch of her naked flesh. A few hours later and there she was, his perfect, pure Mistress, running, drunk and laughing around our house in nothing but a pair of little white panties with her cherry red bottom cheeks peeping out at either side.
