A more complex example occurs in Play Time when the German businessman introduces Hulot to his dining companions and Hulot, in the center foreground of the shot with his back to the camera, bows at each one in turn. Behind them is the table of American tourists, and another man, who is partly obscured by Hulot, approaches Barbara and asks her to dance. As she gets up, one of the tourists sitting next to her happens to glance at Hulot, mistakes his bow at one of the German businessman’s companions for an invitation to dance, and eagerly accepts (fig. 3.63). There are four zones of action in this shot—Hulot bowing in the foreground, the businessman’s friends acknowledging his bows in the mid-ground, Barbara getting up to dance just behind them, and her friend misinterpreting Hulot’s bow in the background—and it is difficult to keep track of them all. The result is that the viewer is potentially as confused as Hulot when Barbara’s friend joins him for a dance (a mutual interference gag) followed by Barbara and her suitor. To top it off, when the two couples walk onto the crowded dance floor in the next shot, another man thinks Barbara’s friend is asking him to dance. As she shakes her head, Barbara’s suitor begins dancing with her, leaving Barbara to dance with Hulot. Again, this is hard to see as it is filmed in a long shot packed with dancing people, leaving the spectator wondering how Hulot and Barbara end up together.
