TULIP TREE Deciduous—Sun

Tulip Poplar, Yellow Poplar, Whitewood Ht. 70’ Spread 40’

Liriodendron tulipifera Spacing 30’–40’

(lir-ee-oh-DEN-dron too-li-PIF-err-uh)

HABIT: Straight trunk, smooth bark, leaves shaped like tulips, yellow fall color. Interesting flowers in late spring but sometimes hard to see.

CULTURE: Any deep, well-drained soil. Does not like rock. High water requirement in heat of summer.

USES: Shade tree.

PROBLEMS: Leaf drop in mid to late summer.

NOTES: The only poplar that I recommend. Native to midwestern, northeastern, and southeastern United States.
