Terpenoids

Terpenoids are a large and structurally diverse group of secondary metabolites that have been used in plant taxonomic studies. The most commonly used compounds in taxonomy are the mono- and sesquiterpenoids (Fig. 13.6). Monoterpenoids (volatile essential oils) and Sesquiterpenoids (major components of essential oils) are characteristic of the Magnoliales and Piperales.

Sesquiterpene lactones (Table 13.2) have been extensively used in studies of some families like Asteraceae. Within Asteraceae, the broad chemical variation has revealed taxonomic utility from tribal to interspecific levels.
