Site Planning

One of the most important considerations in planning your orchard is the location. Dwarf trees can be planted successfully in many different situations. They do well in lawns, tilled gardens, and less managed spots. Espaliers, or trellis-trained trees, are often attractive, but require more attention than free-standing trees. The location is often dictated by the space available; however, you should be able to fit an orchard into the area available and to accentuate the appearance of your home landscape.

Plan to plant the trees where sunlight is available for the better part of the day, if not all day. Fruit trees often will not do well and may produce fruit sparingly if growing in the shade or if planted too close to large trees or buildings, especially on the north side.
