Hannah helped get breakfast on the table, sent Eli and Jonas scampering off to school with full lunch pails, and cleaned up the kitchen in record time. Rebecca did not look as sickly this morning and didn’t need to run for the bathroom at all. She only nibbled at dry toast and drank her special ginger tea, but these at least seemed to be agreeing with her temperamental stomach, for now.

Hannah insisted Rebecca take it easy as much as possible and work on her mending while the girls played at her feet. She, on the other hand, would single-handedly fight the beastly wringer washing machine and hang the multiple loads of laundry on the line.

Pants flapped in the brisk autumn breeze as if they had a life of their own. Hannah fought to clip the uncooperative dresses and shirts to the line. She nearly swallowed the wooden clothespin she’d stuck in her mouth when she saw a buggy pull up and Samuel point her out to Bishop Sol and Jeremiah Yoder. Good thing her teeth had a good grip on the clothespin. What in the world could they possibly want with her? Had they somehow discovered she was a phony? Had they come to demand she leave?

Hannah pulled the clothespin from her mouth quickly and jabbed it onto Samuel’s wayward blue shirt that attempted to escape from the line. With one hand, she tucked a flapping strand of hair back into her bun and with the other, she smoothed the green dress and black apron. That would have to do. No time to make herself more presentable.

She gulped when the tall, stern-looking bishop and the shorter, plumper Jeremiah Yoder stopped within spitting distance.

Mutt and Jeff or Laurel and Hardy. She fought a smile. She drew in a shaky breath and forced her gaze up to search the bishop’s serious brown eyes. It was almost as if he could see into her soul. Hannah resisted a shudder and let her eyes travel to Jeremiah’s face instead.

“Gude mariye, Hannah,” Bishop Sol greeted. Jeremiah nodded.

“Gude mariye.” Hannah’s voice barely surpassed whisper level. She thought about clearing her throat and trying again but decided to wait.

“Hannah, we’d like to talk to you for a few minutes, if this is a gut time.”

“This is fine. Would you like to come inside?”

“Here is fine.”

Hannah nodded and waited, bracing herself for accusations, or reprimand, or whatever. Her mind tried to formulate a defense on short notice.

“Jeremiah and I are two of the school board members,” Bishop Sol began. “As you know, Sarah Fisher will be getting married and will no longer be our teacher.”

“Jah.” Hannah nodded.

“She has recommended you, and we—Jeremiah, the other school board members, and I—agreed that we would ask you to teach our scholars.”

Hannah’s jaw drop. They weren’t chasing her out of town! They wanted her to teach their children. They wanted her to stay.

“We know you came here to visit”—Jeremiah apparently found his voice and spoke for the first time—“but we are hoping you will stay.
