NINTH CHORDS

Ninth chords are chords that contain an interval of a ninth. In most cases, these chords are four-note seventh chords that also contain an interval of a major ninth. An important concept to remember when dealing with ninth chords is the following: major ninths are always added to chords unless otherwise specified. In the following example, notice how all of the example chords use the same major ninth interval – a D in this case.

There will be occasions where a minor or augmented ninth will be used, but this will always be specified with a qualifier such as + or 9, - or flat 9. Ninth chords can often be a point of confusion for students. With a chord such as a Cm9, you might expect that the ninth of this chord would be a minor ninth. In this case, the ninth is still a major ninth. Just remember that ninths are always major unless otherwise specified. An easy way to tell the type of underlying chord quality for any ninth chord is to replace 9 with 7. For example, an Fm9 is really an Fm7 with a major ninth added. A B9 is really a B7 with major ninth added.
