The 2-5-1 progression

One of the most common chord progressions in jazz is the 2-5-1-progression. This progression consists of seventh chords made by harmonizing the first, second, and fifth degrees of the major scale. When harmonizing the root of a C major scale you get a Cmaj7 (1-3-5-7). On the second degree you get a Dm7 (1-b3-5-b7) and on the fifth degree you get a G7 (1-3-5-b7).

So far we haven’t been dealing with minor chords, so let’s look at some basslines for this progression before we incorporate it in our twelve bar blues. The first example is going upwards on the first chord and downwards on the next forming a nice sounding pattern which is and easy to play as well.
