Let's play another scale, the D harmonic minor scale. With the right hand, the 1st finger (or thumb) plays D, the 2nd finger plays E and 3rd finger plays F. Your thumb must now pass under your 3rd finger and play G, 2nd finger plays A, 3rd finger plays Bb, 4th finger plays C# and little finger plays D.

When descending the D harmonic minor scale, you simply play everything in reverse with the same fingers. This means that your 5th finger plays D, 4th plays C#, 3rd plays Bb, 2nd plays A and 1st plays G. Your 3rd finger now passes over your thumb and plays F, 2nd finger plays E and first finger plays D.

How to Play the D Harmonic Minor Scale (Left Hand Fingering)

Let's play the D harmonic minor scale with the left hand. To go up the scale, you play D with finger 5, E with finger 4, F with finger 3, G with finger 2 and A with finger 1. Your 3rd finger now passes over your thumb and plays Bb, 2nd finger plays C# and 1st finger plays D.

When descending the scale, it’s reversed. In other words, your 1st finger plays D, 2nd finger plays C# and 3rd finger plays Bb. Your first finger now passes under your 3rd finger and plays A, 2nd plays G, 3rd plays F, 4th plays E and 5th plays D.
