Pia’s home was beautiful. She lived in a 600-square foot apartment in the Parioli quartiere in the northern part of the city which looked like something a Luca Guadagnino film would be shot at. Quaint, sufficiently modern while not entirely losing touch with the rustic historical nature of the area.

As soon as they entered the apartment, there it was, occupying most of the living room despite its modest size, Pia’s gorgeous Fazioli baby grand piano. It looked majestic. Elegant proportions and clean lines with a shiny black finish. Pia asked Noelle to make herself comfortable while she quickly went to use the restroom.

Noelle looked around the apartment. A brightly lit room with a huge window letting in all that warm Italian sunshine. There were little trinkets everywhere in the living room. A Dobby bobblehead here and a Cosima Funko Pop there, a huge floor lamp in the corner, a stack of books sitting on a coffee table, everything was inviting. The interiors are so chic yet playful like Pia , she thought.

She walked over to where the books were and picked up the one on top. It was a book titled Smörgåsbord of Musings by an author whose name she couldn’t pronounce. She leafed through the pages. It was a poetry book. She randomly landed on a page with a poem titled La musique . She began reading it out loud.

“A good musician wants more fans

A better musician wants more stage

I am neither one of those—”

Suddenly she heard Pia’s voice join hers.

“I just want to be the music in you,” they both said together.

Noelle turned to look at Pia, who looked back at her with such softness. She looked hopeful. Noelle set the book aside and walked toward Pia, smiling. “I see you’ve memorized the poem.”

“This one particularly spoke to me, Noelle. I mean, how beautiful it is to desire to be one with someone’s music. Like, you empower someone’s passion. You’re not just someone’s muse, but you become the beating heart of their art. Not craving recognition. The world doesn’t even need to know of their existence, but the musician knows it. The musician’s love for that person fuels their every song, their every performance, every bit of their music.”

“Wow, it does take a LOT of love to feel that way,” Noelle said. “You think you’ll ever get there?”

“I hope to, someday. I mean, what’s better than love? Nothing.”

“Not even food?”

“Food made with no love tastes bad, no?”

“Aww, you called me ‘ No .’ That’s what my godparents call me. Short for the already short ‘Noelle.’”

Pia loved the way she went aww . She looked even cuter with her puppy dog eyes when she said it. So, Pia didn’t tell her that she’d misunderstood. She just decided to call her No .

“But yeah, I agree with you, Pia. Cibo with no love-o tastes really bad-o.” Noelle looked awfully proud of that sentence.

Pia chuckled. “Who learns how to say ‘food’ in Italian before they learn the word for ‘love’?

“Me. You’re looking at her.
