SPECKLE-LIPPED SKINK

Trachylepis maculilabris 18–28cm

A large arboreal skink with pointed snout and long tail. Body scales have 5–8 keels and are in 29–35 midbody rows. Body colour varies regionally, but distinguished by yellow eyelids and black-and-white barred lips. Body brown, often darkly speckled, and sides of neck speckled with white. May have orange bar on flank (Kenyan coast). Climbs in low bush, sheltering under bark or in hollow trunks. Lays 6–8 eggs and feeds on small insects.
