As for the breakdown of Aristotle and Stoic natural law... this I've learned not to feel sorry for. I think that Augustine-apart from his constant leaning on the Platonists-was the discoverer of personality and he also saw that a person as an agent in history makes himself and affects other folk and so helps create a culture. Forget about nature's apparent hierarchy. We must choose what to do, remember where we are, look ahead, and choose our aim, and act now! This is human historical existence. We can remember all the way back to Adam-repent of our sins back to Adam-and anticipate the Kingdom. This outlook-and it is being worked out by the rejection of Aristotle-is closer to biblical thinking than the Scholastic scheme.
